#WeAreMigrants Feature: Karen L. in the United Kingdom

"As a migrant worker, first, you need to take care of yourself, not abuse to overwork because your health is the only wealth of ourselves, because if we become ill, we’re alone and far from our families. No one can help us only our self. " - Karen L.

1. WHAT’S THE MAIN REASON THAT YOU BECAME A MIGRANT OR MIGRANT WORKER?

The main reason that I became a migrant or migrant worker is the future of my son and family because of the poverty of life. Also, I don't have a job last 1998 because the company that I’d been working for was closed because of bankruptcy, and the salary of my ex-husband was not enough for our daily needs, we are renting only a small room for the three of us. We need to pay our rent, water, and electricity bills and the school fee of my son because at that time he was already in the nursery and we are struggling with how to budget the small amount in big expenses, and my ex-husband in reaching of a problem he didn't know how to face or handle it. So, I decided to apply abroad in Singapore through salary deduction at the agency of my teacher's daughter at Pasay City in Metro Manila, they just asked me to submit my complete document with biodata, and they directly contact the agency in Singapore.

2. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT AS A MIGRANT THIS 2021?

My proudest moment as a migrant this 2021 is I can already help my family, relatives, and people who are ill that need to go to see a doctor because they can not afford to pay the doctor's fee because they don't have money. Even with other people who seek or ask for financial help from me, I didn't hesitate to help because I already experienced that situation all the time I had nothing and nobody help me. That's why I'm grateful to HIM that he's always been there for me after all my sacrifices, he instruments me to help others.

3. WHAT IS YOUR MESSAGE OF ENCOURAGEMENT OR EMPOWERMENT FOR MIGRANTS AROUND THE WORLD?

My message of encouragement or empowerment for migrants around the world is: As a migrant worker, first, you need to take care of yourself, not abuse to overwork because your health is the only wealth of ourselves, because if we become ill we’re alone and far from our families. No one can help us only our self.

Second, we need to save money for ourselves and retirement in the future in times we are going to for good in our country. We have money to do a small business for a lifetime. Don’t remit all your salary to your family once the money is in your hand at the end of the month. Because we Filipino migrant people are not thinking about our future when we are getting old, we’re always working to earn money to send for the family back in our country without saving any single cent for ourselves, that’s why a lot of migrant workers getting old and going back to our origin country don't have money, so, please save for your future.

4. WHO IS SOMEONE IN YOUR MIGRANT COMMUNITY WHO HAS SUPPORTED OR INSPIRED YOU THIS YEAR?

The Voice of Domestic Workers members, Marissa, and my friends in this organization because without them I don't have to meet different people of the government to fight what we campaign and I meet all the volunteers of our classes and I learned a lot, especially about Social Media, Information Technology, Body, Mind, and Well-ness and Financial Well-Being.
